Giant Armadillo Osteoderm Fossil Pair – Bony Armor Plates

This is a pair of flex osteoderms (shell pieces) from two different species of giant armadillo animals called a pampathere. Their shells are made up of thousands of these that lock together. These species are Holmesina septentrionalis (larger) and Holmesina floridanus (smaller). Holmesina floridanus is the precursor (ancestor) that evolved into to the larger septentrionalis. These were fantastic Pleistocene animals that went extinct at the end of the ice age along with so many other megafauna.

3 Species Armadillo Body Armor Fossil Collection

This is collection of three pieces (osteoderms) of the shell of three different species of armadillo like animals. The large and medium sized osteoderms are both from different species within the genus Holmesina. The medium one is Holmesina floridanus; the large one is Holmesina septentrionalis. The smaller of the osteroderms is from Dasypus bellus. This is a nice collection of three different prehistoric armadillos that lived during the Pleistocene.

This is collection of three pieces (osteoderms) of the shell of a giant armadillo like animal called a pampathere. Their shells are made up of thousands of these that lock together. This species is Holmesina septentrionalis, a fantastic Pleistocene animal that went extinct at the end of the ice age along with so many other megafauna. These osteoderms are in great condition.
