Huge Alligator Body Armor Bony Plate (Osteoderm) | Pleistocene of Florida

This is an absolutely massive fossil body armor plate from an alligator. These things serve as both protection for the alligator, but also as mini little solar panels that help to collect energy from the sun. There is a little bit of flaking on the bottom of the osteoderm, shown in the photos. That can occasionally cause a tiny piece to flake off, but the stability of the fossil itself is secure and the price has been reduced due to this. It should display beautifully in somebody’s collection. Pics really don’t do justice to just how robust this one is.
